What is an SMS QR code?
An SMS QR code opens the phone's messaging app with the recipient and message body already filled in. The person scanning just taps send, making it ideal for keyword campaigns, votes, and quick contact requests.
It uses the smsto: format, which iOS and Android both support. The number and message are encoded into a static image, so nothing is stored on a server and the code never expires.
How to create one
- 1Select the SMS type
Click the SMS tile to reveal the number and message fields.
- 2Enter the phone number
Include the country code, for example +1 or +44. No spaces or dashes are needed.
- 3Write the message
Add the body text that will appear ready to send — a keyword, a vote, or a short note.
- 4Customize
Change colors or add a logo to fit your campaign.
- 5Download
Export PNG for print or SVG for scalable, sharp output.
When to use it
Let people text a keyword like "JOIN" to a number to sign up for alerts or offers.
Collect votes by having attendees scan and send a prefilled text.
Give customers a one-tap way to text your business from a sign or card.
Let supporters scan to send a donation keyword to a shortcode.
Printing and scanning tips
- Always include the country code so the message reaches the right number for international scanners.
- Keep the message short — long bodies create denser codes.
- Test by scanning with your own phone to confirm the number and body appear correctly.
- Print at least 2 × 2 cm with a clear white quiet zone.
- Use dark dots on a light background for reliable scanning.
Frequently asked questions
Does it send the text automatically?
No. Scanning opens a draft message for the person to review and send. Nothing is sent without their confirmation.
Does it work on iPhone and Android?
Yes. The smsto: format is supported by both platforms and opens the default messaging app.
Can I prefill the message body?
Yes. Fill in the message field and it appears ready to send when the conversation opens.
Do I need the country code?
Yes. Include it so the message reaches the right number, especially for codes scanned by international visitors.
Does the code expire?
No. As long as the number stays active, the code keeps opening a prefilled text forever.
Is the phone number visible in the code?
Yes, it is encoded into the image. Only share the code where you are comfortable being texted.
